Dr. Irwin’s background and Resume



Dr. Irwin was Instructor in Surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, and Senior Scientist at The George Washington University Medical Center.  He held grants as Principal Investigator from the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation, the National Cancer Institute, the National Center for Research Resources and the American Heart Foundation before joining the NIH in their extramural funding programs in 1983.  He worked in both research program and review settings, spending time in the Division of Research Grants (now the Center for Scientific Review), the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, and the National Cancer Institute.  Over a period of almost 17 years, he had direct review experience with almost all the major grant mechanisms used by the NIH.     

After leaving the NIH, Dr. Irwin served as Vice President for Research Services (and Interim Vice President for Clinical Trials) at the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (1999-2003), Associate Director at the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, Georgetown (2003-2005), Consultant and Managing Director for Science and Education at the American Association for Cancer Research (2005-2007), and consultant to several organizations, including the American Society of Clinical Oncology, since 2007.
